Why You Will Love This Recipe

Simple to Make: This recipe uses just a few ingredients and takes only minutes to make! It's simple enough that you can make it perfectly even if you have never cooked before!

Rich Coffee Flavor: Coffee and cream are a perfect match and with the addition of instant espresso powder, you get that incredible coffee flavor in a whipped cream that can be used to top a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, or added to desserts like cheesecake and cupcakes!

Light and Fluffy Texture: This recipe has the same texture as traditional whipped cream, just a little different flavor.

If you like flavored whipped cream, you'll also want to try this recipe flavored with cinnamon or add caramel sauce to this recipe to make caramel latte cream. You may also enjoy peanut butter cream!

    Key Ingredients

Overhead showing measuring cup of whipped cream, and individual bowls of powdered sugar, espresso powder, and vanilla extract.

See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full list of ingredients, including measurements.

Heavy Whipping Cream: Use a cream with 36% milkfat so that it will whip up nice and thick.

Espresso Powder: Add between 3-6 teaspoons of espresso powder, depending on how much coffee flavor you want. You can also use instant coffee granules if you do not have espresso powder on hand. It will have a more subtle coffee flavor so you may want to add a little extra.

Powdered Sugar: Powdered sugar (also known as confectioners' sugar or icing sugar) sweetens the heavy cream. It also has cornstarch in it, which helps the cream stay nice and thick. An equal amount of granulated sugar can be substituted.

Vanilla Extract: This is an optional ingredient, but I love the flavor that it adds.

How to Make Coffee Whipped Cream

    1. Place the heavy whipping cream in a large mixing bowl. For best results, use an electric mixer (either a stand mixer or a handheld mixer will work).
    2. Beat the cream on medium speed for about a minute, until it gets foamy and just starts to thicken.
    3. Add the remaining ingredients, then increase to high speed until stiff peaks form.
Two side-by-side images, left one shows incredients in bowl, right is the cream fluffy with stiff peaks.

To test if the whipped cream is ready pull the whisk attachment out of the cream. If the cream stands straight up then it is ready. If the peaks droop down then you need to continue beating.

How to Make Whipped Cream Last Longer

Whipped cream should be stored in the refrigerator and enjoyed on the same day it is made. But there are a few ways to make it last longer if you want to have it for several days.

    • Add ¼ teaspoon of cream of tartar. This is my favorite ingredient for stabilizing whipped cream as it is a lot easier than using unflavored gelatin and it extends the shelf life up to 4 days.
    • Add the cream to a chilled bowl. This will help it whip up firmly, which helps it last longer.
    • Use dairy that is straight out of the fridge. This works in the same way as using a cold bowl. You want your whipping cream to be as cold as possible (without being frozen) so leave it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

Ways to Use Espresso Whipped Cream

    • Coffee lovers will enjoy this recipe on top of their hot coffee, iced coffee, and lattes!
    • Or add it to a shot of espresso for an espresso con panna.
    • Use it as a filling for crepes or cream puffs or as a topping on pancakes.
    • Pipe it on top of plain cheesecake, or chocolate, caramel, or mocha cheesecake!
    • Use it as a frosting for cakes and cupcakes. Dust with cocoa powder or chocolate sprinkles for added pizzazz.
    • Add it to hot chocolate for an extra layer of creaminess and flavor.
    • Use it as a dip for fresh berries, pretzels, and cookies.
    • Add it to cocktails like Irish coffee, White Russians, and mudslides.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use regular coffee instead of instant?

Instant espresso or coffee powder is recommended for this recipe as it enables you to add coffee flavor without added liquid. Chilled coffee can be used instead, but it will only whip to soft peaks.

Can I use a hand whisk instead of an electric mixer?

While it is possible to make whipped cream using a hand whisk, it will take significantly longer and require more elbow grease. An electric mixer is recommended to speed up the process and ensure that the whipped cream reaches the desired consistency.

    Can you re-whip whipped cream?

Yes, it is normal for whipped cream to lose its volume over time. When this happens you can whip it a little bit with an electric mixer to restore its texture.

Can you make coffee whipped cream in a dispenser?

Sure! Just add the instant powder along with the rest of the ingredients. Follow the instructions in this whipped cream dispenser recipe to charge the cream.
