Of course, no discussion of Kentucky's cuisine would be complete without mentioning two enduring claims to fame—fried chicken and the Kentucky Derby. Colonel Harland Sanders built an empire on his secret 11 herbs and spices recipe for the crunchiest, most flavorful fried chicken.

Every May, Louisville plays host to the country's oldest continuously held horse race—an event celebrated with indulgences like Mint Juleps and slices of Derby pie.

The Hot Brown is another iconic Kentucky original, an open-faced turkey sandwich smothered in a creamy parmesan sauce. It was first served at Louisville's Brown Hotel in the 1920s to revive hungry late-night dinner dancers.
