With just four simple ingredients, this Peanut Butter Whipped Cream comes together quickly and gets eaten just as fast. I love to use it for topping cakes, pies, and pancakes, and it even caught the attention of Freddy’s Frozen Custard, where it was featured as a favorite homemade topping idea.
I absolutely love whipped cream and all of the wonderful ways it can be flavored and used! I've got lots of recipes for infusing whipped cream with cinnamon, coffee, caramel, and more.
Now I'm so excited to share this easy homemade peanut butter topping, which delivers that classic nutty flavor in the creamiest whipped texture.
Ingredients and Substitutions

- Heavy Whipping Cream: Use cream with at least 36% milk fat so it whips up thick and fluffy. Lower-fat cream won't hold peaks as well.
- Peanut Butter: Stick with creamy peanut butter for a smooth texture. Natural peanut butter can make the whipped cream a little grainy, but it still works if that’s what you have.
- Powdered Sugar: Powdered (confectioners') sugar sweetens and helps stabilize the whipped cream. You can swap in granulated sugar if needed. For a low-carb option, use a keto-friendly sweetener like Stevia. Start with a little less and adjust to taste.
- Vanilla Extract: Optional, but it rounds out the flavor. Skip it if you don’t have any on hand.
- Cream of Tartar: Also optional. A pinch helps the whipped cream hold its shape longer, especially if you’re piping or making it ahead.
Can I use PB2 instead of creamy peanut butter?
PB2 powdered peanut butter can be used in place of creamy peanut butter, using the same amount. It actually holds up even better because there’s no oil to cause separation, so the whipped cream stays stable longer.
I wrote the recipe with traditional peanut butter since it's easier to find, but if you have PB2 on hand, this is a great time to use it.
Tips for the Best Peanut Butter Whipped Cream

Mix Ingredients Together
- Start with cold heavy cream straight from the fridge. Cold cream whips faster and holds its shape better.
- Chill your mixing bowl and whisk attachment for about 15 minutes before you begin. It’s a small step that really helps the cream stay light and fluffy.
- Make sure your peanut butter is at room temperature. Cold peanut butter won’t blend as easily and can leave little lumps in the cream.
- Mix everything together at low speed first. This gently combines the ingredients without splattering or aerating the cream too early.

Beat to Stiff Peaks
- Once the ingredients are blended, turn the mixer up to medium-high speed to start whipping air into the cream.
- Keep a close eye as it thickens. You're looking for soft to medium peaks. The cream should hold its shape but still look smooth and silky.
- Stop whipping as soon as you reach soft peaks. If you keep going, the oils in the peanut butter can start to separate, making the whipped cream heavy or grainy.

Peanut Butter Frosting Ideas
- Frost cakes and cupcakes. Spread it onto cakes and cupcakes for a smooth, rich peanut butter frosting. Sprinkle chopped peanuts on top for crunch.
- Top pies and cheesecakes. It's the perfect topping for no bake cream cheese peanut butter pie!
- Dip fresh fruit into the whipped peanut butter cream. It makes eating fresh strawberries, banana slices, apple wedges, and other fruits so much more delicious.
- Fill or top crepes and pancakes. Use it as a creamy peanut butter filling for crepes or pancakes, or dollop it on top of a stack of pancakes or waffles.
- Use it in parfaits. Layer the creamy mousse with chopped bananas, chocolate chips, crushed cookies, or granola in a parfait glass.
- Make a peanut butter brownie sundae. Top brownies with ice cream, fudge sauce, peanut butter whipped cream, and some chopped peanut butter cups for an indulgent dessert.
- Top your morning coffee or hot chocolate. Add a dollop onto your morning brew for an indulgent breakfast treat.
- Freeze it for an easy dessert that is similar to ice cream.

Whipped Cream Troubleshooting Tips
Even with an easy recipe like this, little things can sometimes throw off the texture. Here’s how to fix it if something doesn’t go quite right.
Issue | Why it Happened | How to Fix it |
Runny cream | Not whipped enough, or cream was too warm | Beat a little longer until soft peaks form; use cold cream next time |
Grainy or broken cream | Overwhipped; peanut butter separated | Gently fold in a splash of cold cream to smooth it back out |
Greasy texture | Whipped past stiff peaks | Stop whipping at soft to medium peaks for a light, billowy texture |
Peanut butter flecks | Peanut butter was too cold | Let peanut butter sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before mixing |
